Bulgaria and Greece want to build an oil pipeline to secure their supplies. A corresponding letter of intent was signed on Thursday by the energy ministers of the two EU countries during a visit by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev to Athens.
“Both countries thus promoting energy security in the region» said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the meeting with Radev. The neighboring EU countries would thus become independent of Russian oil supplies, Mitsotakis added.
Greece already supplies natural gas to Bulgaria through another pipeline; Russia cut off natural gas supplies to Bulgaria last year.
The planned project is to build a pipeline that will connects the Greek port city of Alexandroupolis with the Bulgarian port city of Burgas on the Black Sea coast should. There is the only Bulgarian oil refinery.
Crude oil would be brought in by tanker at the port of Alexandroupolis, which could then be transported to Burgas via the new pipeline. The pipeline is thus the reversal of previous intentions: since 1995, Bulgaria and Greece have planned to have Russian oil brought to the port of Burgas and then forwarded to Alexandroupolis.
