A survivor of Thailand’s cave drama died more than four and a half years after the spectacular rescue, according to one report. The teenager is said to have suffered a head injury in the UK, but the exact cause of death is unclear, the BBC reported on Thursday. The teenager moved to a football academy in Leicester, England last year at the age of 17.

Duangpetch Promthep – better known as Dom Promthep – was the captain of the youth football team that was locked in a flooded stalactite cave with his coach for days in June 2018.

Promthep’s mother informed the temple in his hometown and posted condolences on Facebook, according to the BBC. Several teammates also expressed their condolences on social media.

The spectacular cave drama has been filmed several times and used in many books. It was only after nine days, in which there was no sign of life from the youths and their trainer, that the group of cave divers was discovered four kilometers from the entrance. The rescue became a battle against weather and time. With the help of special divers and more than 1000 helpers, all prisoners were finally freed one by one from the bifurcated cave.

As captain, Dom Promthep had become something of a celebrity in recent years and had traveled extensively around the world, including England, Japan, Argentina and the US.
