A man is said to have stolen someone else’s car under the influence of narcotics in Kehl am Rhein near France – with an eleven-year-old girl in the back seat. According to the police, the child’s mother only wanted to run a short errand on Monday and left the key in the vehicle.
The 44-year-old man got into the car and raced to France with the child. When pursued by police, he reportedly drove back to Germany via the Pierre Pflimlin Bridge. He was eventually caught by officers of the Offenburg traffic service and provisionally arrested.
The girl was unharmed “despite the daring ride”, according to the police. “On the route from Kehl via France to Kappel-Grafenhausen, the car thief had damaged several cars during his escape, some of them considerably.” According to current knowledge, he would have caused two accidents in Kappel and left more damage to the bodywork in Rust.
Police are now looking for other victims and witnesses. The alleged car thief has been reported in France. “Due to the general circumstances, an investigation has also been launched on the strong suspicion of deprivation of liberty,” the police said. (sda/dpa)
