An angry mob stormed a police station in Pakistan and brutally killed a man arrested on charges of blasphemy.
Hundreds of men forced their way into the building and lynched the detainee and vandalized the building, local media reported Saturday. Videos of the event circulated on social media. The man was accused of desecrating the Quran.
Police confirmed the incident in Nankana Sahib district of Punjab province. Sanctions have been imposed against several police officers because they fled the building and could not prevent the lynching of the arrested, according to a spokesperson. “No one should take the law into their own hands, no matter how influential they are,” said the local police chief.
Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive issue in Islamic Pakistan. Those accused of doing so may be targets of so-called “blasphemy vigilante groups” – extremist Muslims who have shot, burned or beat to death alleged heretics.
In 2020, during an ongoing hearing, a US-Pakistani citizen was shot dead in a courtroom. In 2021, a Sri Lankan man was beaten to death and set on fire by colleagues in Pakistan after accusations of blasphemy.
