Man fleeing “angry women” after driving under the influence frees Swiss embassy in Turkey after terror warning reopens

A California driver evaded a drunk driving conviction for a bizarre reason: The man successfully argued in court that he had to run from “two angry women” after his wife caught him with his lover. Driving was therefore necessary and therefore allowed.

The Mendocino County Attorney’s Office in Northwestern California made the case public. Thomas Patrick Houston, 60, of Ukiah, in a wine region, was caught driving under the influence. The case went to court.

“It was testified that Mr. Houston was caught red-handed by his wife and that his driving was necessary to enable him to flee from two angry women,” prosecutors said. California law permits driving under the influence of alcohol in emergency situations when people are at risk of serious bodily harm and there is no alternative to driving.

The prosecution argued unsuccessfully that the law was not intended for a case like Houston’s and has never been applied to such a case. The judge responsible allowed a grand jury to consider fleeing the two women as justification for drunk driving. The jury acquitted Houston of drunk driving. (sda/afp)
