Biden calls China’s balloon spying a violation of international law Scotland worries about whiskey tourism over plans to ban advertising

According to US President Joe Biden, China violated international law by allowing a spy balloon to fly into US airspace. The incident does not represent a major security breach, but it is “absolutely a violation of international law — it’s our airspace,” Biden said in an interview with Telemundo (local time) on Thursday. Referring to the launch of the balloon, he added: “And once it got into our airspace, we could do whatever we wanted with it.”

The US military shot down the balloon over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday after it crossed the United States from the northwest. The US government accuses China of using it to spy on military facilities. Beijing, on the other hand, spoke of a civilian research balloon, mainly for meteorological purposes, and accused the US of overreacting with the launch.

According to the US government, China has attacked more than 40 countries on five continents with a fleet of spy balloons. The equipment in the crashed balloon was “obviously used for intelligence research,” it was later said. (aeg/sda/dpa)
