A month ago, a memorial march for dead demonstrators in Peru sparked fresh clashes with police, injuring around 50 people. Clashes erupted in Juliaca in the south of the country on Thursday as participants in the memorial march attempted to enter the airport grounds. Exactly one month earlier, 18 civilians had been killed at the airport during anti-government protests.
Police used tear gas on Thursday to prevent protesters from entering the airport, the San Román provincial health network reported. 23 civilians were injured, including three minors. For its part, the police reported on Twitter that 25 officers were injured in the clashes at the airport.
Before the riots, families and friends of the protesters killed a month ago had marched peacefully through Juliaca. Among other things, they held up posters with inscriptions such as “The shed blood will never be forgotten”. In addition, signs directed towards President Dina Boluarte asked, “How many deaths must there be before you step down?”
Peru has been ravaged by unrest since the deposition and arrest of left-wing President Pedro Castillo on December 7. At least 48 people were killed. The demonstrators demand the resignation of Castillo’s successor, Boluarte, and the dissolution of parliament to hold new elections without delay. (yam/sda/afp)
