From mid-May it is no longer possible to smoke a joint on the street in the old city center of Amsterdam. The weed ban is a measure against the major problems caused by mass tourism, the Dutch capital announced on Thursday. For years, residents have complained about the consequences of mass tourism, such as drinking, roaring and weed smoking people on the street. Tourists also attract street dealers, the city said, who in turn fuel crime and create an unsafe atmosphere.

A major attraction of Amsterdam are the so-called coffee shops. Tourists can also buy small amounts of hashish and marijuana there. Until now, the drugs can also be smoked in public. Authorities are also investigating whether sales in the coffee shops could be restricted between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m.

The new rules are part of a package of measures against problems caused by mass tourism. Pubs are not allowed to admit new customers after 01:00. And the prostitutes have to close the famous windows at 3 o’clock instead of 6 o’clock before. (sda/dpa)
