Iran’s protest song wins Grammy – the highlights of the 2023 award ceremony One dead and two injured in knife attack in the Netherlands

On Monday evening in Los Angeles, the important Grammy music awards were presented – these artists made history:

«Baraye» – the anthem of the Iranian protest movement, wins a Grammy

A life of freedom for women, for the imprisoned elites, for the girl who wished she were a boy – for all these people, the Iranian musician Shervin Hajipour produced a song – “Baraye”.

The trigger was the death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini, whose death became known worldwide – and led to a wave of protests. The song – which in German means as much as for – considered by many to be the anthem of the protests.

Hajipour shared the song on Instagram in September 2022 – two days later he was arrested by the vice squad. Hajipour was released on bail in October and is now awaiting trial.

“A song can unite, inspire and ultimately change the world.”

The music video has since become unavailable on his Instagram account. Yet the ballad has not disappeared from the face of the earth, on the contrary: the protest song won a Grammy Award in the category “The Best Song for Social Change”.

The First Lady of the United States, Jill Biden, presented the award. “A song can unite, inspire and ultimately change the world,” she said. “Baraye,” she added, is “a powerful and poetic call for freedom and women’s rights” that continues to reverberate around the world.

“A song can unite, inspire and ultimately change the world,” says Jill Biden. “Baraye” is a powerful and poetic call for freedom and women’s rights that continues to reverberate around the world. As the song plays, she sings along with the protest slogan: Woman, Life, Freedom.

The artist could not attend the award ceremony, but thanked for the award on Twitter. “We won,” writes Shervin Hajipour on his unverified Twitter account, which has more than 300,000 subscribers.

Speech by the First Lady:

Kim Petras becomes the first trans woman to win a Grammy

German singer Kim Petras won a Grammy along with Sam Smith for the song “Unholy” in the “Best Pop Duo and Best Group Performance” category. In her acceptance speech, she points out that she was the first trans woman in Grammys history to make history:

“I am the first trans woman to win this award.”

Queen B becomes Grammy Queen

Beyoncé set the record for most Grammys with 32 awards. The singer won in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category with her record “Renaissance”, overtaking the late British-Hungarian conductor Georg Solti in Grammy history with 31 awards. She said visibly moved:

“I’m trying not to be too emotional. I’m just trying to accept this night.”
