PC manufacturer Dell is cutting 6,650 jobs

The American PC manufacturer Dell wants to cut thousands of jobs in view of the weakness in the PC market. He joins the wave of layoffs at tech companies.

According to an internal message from CEO Jeff Clarke, the company is facing market conditions that continue to deteriorate, leaving the future uncertain. The group, based in Round Rock, Texas, confirmed Monday to the Bloomberg news agency, which received Clarke’s internal report, that the cuts to the targeted 6,650 jobs will affect about 5 percent of global workers. Clarke wrote in the statement that the austerity measures introduced so far, such as travel restrictions, are no longer sufficient.

After the boom in the pandemic, consumers have significantly reduced their demand for technology hardware such as smartphones and laptops. High inflation and uncertain economic prospects dampen the buying mood. According to market researcher IDC, Dell shipped 37 percent fewer computers in the last three months of the previous year than in the same period of 2021. Dell realizes more than half of its turnover with PCs.

Rivals such as HP Inc. and IBM recently announced plans to shed thousands of employees. Up to 6,000 jobs would be lost at HP and about 3,900 at IBM. There has also been a wave of layoffs at US software companies after they significantly expanded their workforce during the pandemic. (aeg/sda/awp/dpa)
