18 dead in suspected jihadist attacks in Burkina Faso, Brazil: Court investigates senator over Bolsonaro plot

At least 12 people were killed in an attack by suspected jihadists in northern Burkina Faso this weekend. Gunmen attacked Bani in the Sahel region on Saturday, a resident told AFP news agency, citing at least 12 casualties. Another witness spoke of 13 dead. In addition, six soldiers were killed by an explosive device in the east of the country.

The attack on the town of Bani was confirmed by security circles and there were a “large” number of casualties. According to an eyewitness, the gunmen attacked a police station, the town hall and a school. Security forces repelled the attackers.

According to information from security circles, six soldiers were killed in the east of the country by a homemade explosive device (IED). “Members of the Diapaga military command were on patrol when their vehicle struck a mine on the Diapaga-Partiaga road,” it said.

Outbreaks of violence since 2015

The West African country of Burkina Faso has been caught in a spiral of violence since 2015. Armed attacks regularly take place by jihadist groups, some of which cooperate with the terrorist network al-Qaeda and the jihadist militia ‘Islamic State’ (IS). Thousands of civilians and security forces have been killed in the fighting and two million people have fled their homes.

On January 25, the military junta in Burkina Faso canceled an agreement on the current stationing of about 400 French soldiers and asked France to withdraw its troops within 30 days. It is planned to move the soldiers to neighboring Niger, where about 2,000 French soldiers are stationed. Niger is considered one of France’s last allied states in the region.

Interim President Ibrahim Traoré, who came to power after the second military coup within eight months of 2022, wants to call on new partners in the fight against jihadists in the country. For several weeks there has been a rapprochement with Russia, whose mercenary group Wagner is already active in Mali. (sda/apa/afp)
