Former Pakistani president and military ruler Pervez Musharraf died in Dubai on Sunday after a long illness, his family confirmed to the German news agency. Musharraf was 79 years old.

In 2018, Musharraf was diagnosed with the chronic metabolic disease amyloidosis. According to his family, he has been ventilated since last year.

The ex-general ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008 after his coup against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He has been living in the United Arab Emirates since 2016 after being allowed to leave Pakistan for medical reasons. In 2019, he was sentenced to death in absentia for high treason. However, in 2020, his conviction was overturned.
