Brazil’s Supreme Court has opened an investigation into a senator who reported on a conspiratorial meeting in the presence of former President Jair Bolsonaro to keep him in office despite his election defeat. The federal police found that Senator Marcos do Val had described four different versions of the facts, Brasilia’s highest court said Friday night (local time).
In a press conference, Do Val reported, among other things, on a meeting with ex-president Bolsonaro and a former member of parliament from the Bolsonaro camp. It concerned a conspiracy against Electoral Authority President Alexandre de Moraes, who is also investigating as a Supreme Court judge, among other things for spreading fake news against Bolsonaro. De Moraes should have been arrested and the election should have been in favor of Bolsonaro.
Faced with serious allegations of a possible coup attempt, De Moraes ordered the senator to be heard by the police. However, that cast such doubt on the descriptions that the senator is now under investigation for false testimony and defamation, among other things. The allegations must be fully clarified, the court said in a statement.
The right-wing Bolsonaro was narrowly defeated by left-wing politician Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round of the October presidential election. Many of his supporters do not want to admit defeat and repeatedly call for military intervention. Bolsonaro, who has been in the United States since late last year, recently questioned the outcome of the election there again without providing any evidence. (sda/dpa)
