Afghan professor arrested after campaigning for girls’ education Gary Glitter, convicted of child abuse, is free

According to a media report, the Taliban have arrested a professor for his commitment to education of women and girls.

Ismail Maschal had previously been walking through the streets of Kabul in a colorful cart for several days to hand out books to passers-by, the Afghan news channel Tolo News reported on Friday. He had filled his cart with slogans promoting the education of girls and women. The action caused a stir on social media.

A Taliban representative from the Ministry of Culture accused Maschal on Twitter of carrying out “provocative actions against the system” and causing chaos in the streets. The man was arrested on Thursday. Maschal already caused a sensation at the end of last year when he tore up his diplomas in a live broadcast of Tolo News in protest against the Taliban’s ban on women studying at universities.

Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have been criticized internationally, mainly for their massive curtailment of women’s rights. Girls are not allowed to go to school after the seventh grade. In the end, universities in Afghanistan had to close their doors to female students in December last year. A number of professors have resigned as a result. (aeg/sda/dpa)
