The takeover of power by the Republicans in the US House of Representatives also has consequences for the White House’s Ukraine policy. Representatives of President Joe Biden have called on their counterparts in Kiev to step up the fight against corruption. Ukraine must in the future better keep up with the large arms deliveries and remittances from America, is the demand from Washington.

“It is critically important for the American people to have faith in the integrity of taxpayer money being sent to support Ukraine,” the Biden administration said in a recent statement.

The addressee of this message is not only President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in Kiev. The White House also wants to reassure political opponents in Washington: Republican figureheads like MP Marjorie Taylor Greene have long protested allegedly rampant corruption in Ukraine.

In December, while Democrats still controlled the House of Representatives, Greene’s Foreign Affairs Committee initiative that called for a review of all funds transferred from America to date failed. Republican Michael McCaul, the new chairman of the influential committee, said at the time: “The era of the blank check is over.”

The Democrats, on the other hand, are unmoved. Senator Chris Coons, a friend of Biden, recently said he’s not too worried about US guns falling into the wrong hands. “The Ukrainians use everything we send them.”
