Snow rolls over Austria – and eastern Switzerland will soon also be affected Kiev hopes for concrete prospects for EU membership – the nightly update without photos

It has snowed heavily in Austria for the past 24 hours. And more snow is announced. Switzerland, on the other hand, got nothing. However, that should change next week.

There is not much left of the acclaimed snow roll in Switzerland: just a few days ago, the weather experts expected a lot of fresh snow. And that in time for the start of the sports holidays in many cantons. It goes without saying that Swiss winter sports fans and ski resorts were delighted.

But they celebrated too soon. In the course of the week, the stagnation of precipitation then shifted further and further to the east. Instead of Switzerland, Austria is now sinking into the snow. And the Swiss push snow frustration.

According to the Swiss weather service MeteoNews, up to a meter of snow has fallen east of the Arlberg in the past 24 hours. There are even more locally between the Dead Mountains on the border of the states of Upper Austria and Styria and the Seebergalm. And at the weekend, a maximum of half a meter must be added.

Wetteronline Austria reported on Friday that some Austrian Alpine regions would literally sink into the snow. For example, in Upper Styria between the Schladminger Tauern and the Hochschwab “the second highest avalanche level is even below the tree line”.

In addition, according to the portal, several side valleys are without power due to transformer failures. And at Wildalpen, about 125 people are cut off from the outside world – the only access road is closed due to acute avalanche danger.

Eastern Switzerland: Monday morning 40 centimeters of fresh snow

In Switzerland, on the other hand, it will remain mainly dry and sunny on Friday. In the south it even gets 16 degrees warm thanks to the northern foehn. However, it must also be wet in this country at the weekend. According to MeteoNews, the snow line will be at 1000 to 1400 meters on Saturday. By evening there should be up to 15 centimeters of fresh snow along the Glarner Alps and in the Alpstein above 1500 meters.

On Sunday, the snow line will drop to 500 to 700 meters at low altitude. The weather service currently assumes that 10 to 40 centimeters of fresh snow will fall on the eastern northern slope of the Alps on Monday morning. In Central Switzerland this is a maximum of 20 centimetres. (abi/chmedia)
