After eight years in prison for multiple child abuse, former pop star Gary Glitter has been released according to British media reports.
The 78-year-old left prison on Friday after serving half his sentence, the PA news agency reported on its own information. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in February 2015 for several counts dating back to the 1970s. It is common practice in the UK for a sentence to be suspended halfway through.
The newspapers Sun and Daily Mail reported that strict conditions had been imposed on Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd. He must wear an electronic tag, notify authorities one week in advance if he is traveling abroad and if he is in a relationship with a person who has a minor child.
The former glam rock star was especially successful in the early 1970s with singles such as “Rock and Roll (Parts 1 & 2)”. In 1997, child pornography was discovered on his laptop and Glitter was sentenced to several months in prison. He emigrated to Southeast Asia and was imprisoned in Vietnam for two and a half years for child abuse.
On his return to the UK, Glitter was arrested and eventually convicted in connection with the abuse scandal involving former BBC presenter Jimmy Savile. (aeg/sda/dpa)
