In southern Mexico, an investigation is currently underway against former zoo director Jose Nava. The Guerrero State Audit Office confirmed Thursday that it is investigating alleged animal disappearances and misappropriation of funds.

The Court has not disclosed details of the investigation. But Fernando Ruiz Gutierrez, director of wildlife at the Ministry of the Environment, expressed a macabre suspicion: Nava allegedly slaughtered four pygmy goats on the zoo’s grounds. He is said to have cooked it and served it to his guests on New Year’s Eve. This would not only be problematic for animal welfare reasons: “There were health risks for humans. These animals are not fit for human consumption,” says Ruiz Gutierrez.

Nava was fired from his position as head of the Chilpancingo City Zoo in January. Because the disappearance of the four goats is not the first case that has sparked skepticism: according to Guerrero’s Environment Ministry, several animals have disappeared during his tenure. For example, Nava claimed to have traded a zebra for tools – but these could not be found during an inspection, according to the Guardian. Watussi cattle also disappeared for no plausible reason.

Dead deer cause trouble

As the Spanish newspaper “El Pais” writes, there was also animal cruelty during Nava’s time as director of the Chilpancingo Zoo. In January, a resident found an injured deer, which was then handed over to the zoo. There he died a few days later – animal associations spoke of abuse. It is said that before surgery it was not properly anesthetized and its antlers were chopped off.
