US Navy-backed forces intercepted an Iranian arms shipment en route to civil war-torn Yemen during a raid in the Gulf of Oman.
More than 3,000 assault rifles, nearly 600,000 ammunition and 23 anti-tank guided missiles were seized, according to the responsible regional command of the US military (Centcom). The house search took place two weeks ago, according to a statement on Wednesday evening.
The US Navy is regularly on the sea route between Iran and Yemen and also inspects ships there. According to its own statements, it has already withdrawn weapons destined for Yemen on several occasions. The Yemeni Coast Guard also repeatedly intercepts arms shipments. Tehran has denied providing financial or arms support to Houthi rebels in Yemen.
In 2014, Iran-backed Houthi Shia rebels overran Yemen. Since then they have dominated large areas, mainly in the north of the country. The Yemeni government is fighting them together with a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia. A six-month ceasefire expired last October. Previous attempts to reach a final solution to the conflict in the extremely poor country through mediation have failed.
