Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic spoke for the first time in his country’s parliament about the international solution plan for Kosovo.
“I have not signed anything, initialed nothing and we will continue the talks (with the international negotiators),” he said in an hour-and-a-half address to MPs on Thursday. During the speech minutes of applause erupted from the benches of the government factions.
The initiative originally presented by Germany and France to normalize the situation in Kosovo stipulates, among other things, that the two neighboring countries will not formally recognize each other, but will mutually accept their state existence. Kosovo, which has been independent since 2008, is now inhabited almost exclusively by Albanians. Serbia does not recognize the state of its former province and claims the territory of Kosovo for itself.
As Vucic explained in parliament, a number of points in the international plan are difficult or even unacceptable from the Serbian point of view. Belgrade must prevent Kosovo from being admitted to international organizations in the future. However, the international negotiators – representatives of Germany, France, Italy, the EU and the US – had threatened that EU accession negotiations, which had been ongoing since 2014, would be halted and that foreign investment would be halted, said Vucic.
“It is vital for Serbia to stay on the European path,” he added. “Many things” would depend on this, such as “investments, living standards, pensions and salaries”. Last autumn, the outlines of the Franco-German plan were announced. He is now backed by the EU as a whole and the US. (sda/dpa)
