“Knife attack” in the EU district: Police arrest a man in the subway station

Police arrested a young man in a metro station in the heart of the EU quarter in Brussels. A DPA reporter noted this on site on Monday evening. A few minutes earlier, passersby had shouted, “He’s got a knife,” a DPA reporter heard. Mayor Philippe Close of Brussels wrote in the evening on Twitter: “Knife attack at the Schuman station”. Good cooperation between the police led to a quick arrest. Initially, there was no police confirmation for a knife attack.

During the arrest, several police officers with dogs were also present at the Schuman stop to protect the area. Rescue workers took care of passers-by just in front of the European Commission.

A spokeswoman for the police told the dpa that it can confirm an arrest. There is also one injured – she doesn’t know how badly she is currently injured. Furthermore, no further details were initially given.

As the Brussels transport company announced on Twitter, local public transport in the vicinity of the Schumann stop was partially shut down – due to a police action. Schuman station is located right between important EU institutions and is used by many EU workers. The EU Commission, the Council of the European Union and the Foreign Service of the EU border directly on the station. (sda/dpa)
