CDU presidency calls on ex-intelligence chief Maassen to leave the party How this radioactive mini-capsule keeps Australia in suspense – explained in 6 points

The Presidium of the German Christian Democrats (CDU) has unanimously called on former President for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maassen, to leave the party.

If he does not leave the CDU by noon on Sunday (February 5), the party’s federal board must initiate exclusion proceedings against Maassen “and revoke his membership rights with immediate effect,” the CDU announced on Monday after consultations in the party’s presidium . . “His statements and the ideas they express have no place in our party,” the text of the decision reads.

In recent days, Maassen again came under heavy criticism. In a tweet, he claimed that the thrust of the “driving forces in the political and media space” was “exterminating racism against whites.” In an interview, the 60-year-old spoke of a “red-green race theory”.

The former head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (domestic secret service) is a member of the Thuringian CDU, but holds no office or position in the state association. The state board of the Thuringian CDU had already unanimously asked him to leave the party on Thursday evening.

The text of the decision of the federal commission says about Maassen’s statements: “He repeatedly uses the language of the milieu from anti-Semites and conspiracy ideologues to ethnic expressions.” Secretary General Mario Czaja therefore asked Maassen to leave the party. The presidium supports the request and sets the deadline for this on Sunday.

In addition, the Presidium “dealt with the so-called Union of Values” and “expressed its political disapproval of this organization.” Anyone who is a member of the CDU cannot be a member of the Union of Values at the same time, it said.

Maassen was elected chairman of the conservative union with 95 percent of the vote at a general meeting in North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday. According to its own statements, it has about 4,000 members – not all of them are also members of the CDU or CSU. (sda/dpa)
