Selenskyj: “The situation is very tough” – the night update without photos The suspected jihadist wanted to attack swimmers in Benidorm

Despite the currently difficult situation at the front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shown confidence in victory against the Russian attackers. “2023 must and will certainly be the year of our victory,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram on Sunday. In his video address every evening, he also admitted in view of his country’s hard-fought east: “The situation is very tough.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine has also reported heavy Russian shelling in the south of the city of Kherson and in the east of Kharkov.

Zelenskyj: Russia wants to prolong the war

In the Donetsk region, the cities of Bakhmut and Wuhledar, in particular, are still subject to continuous Russian shelling, Zelensky said. Despite heavy casualties in their own ranks, the Russians did not lessen the intensity of their attacks there. “Russia hopes to prolong the war and exhaust our troops.”

“So we must make time our weapon. We must speed up events,” the Ukrainian leader said. In particular, the speed of delivery of foreign military aid is a key factor in this war. Selenskyj also urged further arms deliveries beyond the main battle tanks recently promised by the West.

Scholz denounces the debate over the delivery of fighter jets

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has criticized the debate over the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine. “It is strange that this debate is being held. Some people have to ask: why is he asking the question when it comes to helping the Ukrainians,” Scholz said at a press conference in Santiago de Chile on Sunday evening (local time). What is now needed is a serious debate and not “a contest ( …), in which domestic political motives may come to the fore instead of supporting Ukraine.” An issue as important as arms supplies should be about the case and rational considerations, Scholz stressed.

Ukraine is demanding fighter jets and the United States has not fundamentally ruled out a delivery. SPD leader Saskia Esken did not rule out the delivery of fighter planes in the ARD on Sunday.

Ukraine reports several deaths after Russian shelling of Kherson

Authorities say three people have been killed by Russian fire in Kherson, in southern Ukraine. Six others were injured, the Kherson regional administration announced. A clinic building was also hit. The regional capital of the Kherson region of the same name, which the Ukrainian army recaptured a few months ago, has repeatedly been heavily shelled by Russian forces.

For their part, the Russian occupiers in the neighboring region of Zaporizhia reported four deaths from Ukrainian shelling. The information from the war zone is often difficult to verify independently.

Together with Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk, Zaporizhia is one of the Ukrainian regions that Russia partially occupied and annexed last year. In addition, in 2014, Moscow annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in violation of international law.

Russian missiles on Kharkiv

A residential building in the city center was hit late Sunday evening by a rocket attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. At least one person died and three other residents were injured. According to military administrator Oleh Sinegubov, helpers were searching the rubble for other possible victims.

Ukraine gloats over attack on Iranian military facility

Ukraine expressed joy over an attack on a military facility in Iran. In recent months, Kiev has repeatedly criticized Tehran for supplying combat drones to Moscow. “The logic of war is unrelenting and murderous,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak wrote on Twitter. “And he gives the authors and accomplices hard bills. (…) Ukraine warned you.”

According to a report by the Iranian state news agency IRNA, a munitions factory belonging to the Ministry of Defense near the metropolis of Isfahan was attacked with several small aircraft on Sunday night. Iran’s defense ministry said it was a military strike, but no one was injured. The Iranian government announced it would send a team of experts to the city to investigate the background.

What will be important on Monday:

On Monday (10 a.m.), the agriculture ministers of the EU countries will discuss in Brussels, among other things, the consequences of the war in Ukraine. (sda/dpa)
