The hangover Neko, run over by a train in Paris, causes a lot of commotion. Now even the French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, has spoken out. He was shocked by the way the French railway company SNCF had handled the terrible affair.
The investigations must show who is criminally responsible, the minister said to the French television channel BFMTV on Friday. Now he wants to better fight animal cruelty with training for police officers across the country, he said on Twitter.
Neko, le chat lâchement écrasé by the SNCF.

The cat escaped from the carrier bag of his owners Georgia and their 15-year-old daughter Melaïna at Montparnasse train station on January 2 and disappeared under a train. Despite 20 minutes of negotiations with staff, they could not prevent the train from leaving, Melaïna told the animal welfare organization “30 million friends”. They were told it wasn’t their problem, it was just a cat and they should have kept her on a leash.
The organization has now sued the SNCF for “serious mistreatment and cruelty leading to the death of an animal”. If it comes to trial, a fine of up to 75,000 euros and a prison sentence of five years can be imposed.
As the daily newspaper “Le Parisien” wrote, the SNCF regrets the tragic incident and stated that it could not save the cat because it is strictly forbidden to go on the tracks due to the risk of electrocution.
