In a rare move, Saudi Arabia has responded to the terrorist attack in East Jerusalem by killing several people. “The Kingdom condemns all attacks on civilians,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday.
At the same time, the influential Gulf state, which has no diplomatic ties with Israel, warned that the situation between Palestinians and Israelis could slide into another serious escalation. Saudi Arabia has often commented in the past on the plight of the Palestinians, but not on terrorism directed against Israelis.
An attacker shot dead seven people Friday near a synagogue in an Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem. Several people were injured. Police say the attacker was killed trying to escape.
Israel maintains ties with several Arab countries and also strives to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia, which is actually an enemy. For Riyadh, however, this is a condition that Israel resolves the conflict with the Palestinians peacefully. However, both countries have been working together behind the scenes on security issues against the threat posed by their common enemy, Iran, for some time now. (cst/sda/dpa)
