Victims are teenagers – that’s what we know about the train attack in Germany Prince Harry’s autobiography “Spare” sets a record

After a knife attack on a regional train in northern Germany, the identities of the two dead have been clarified.

The Interior Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, provided information on the interim status of the investigation before a state parliament on Thursday.

What happened?

A man stabbed several passengers on Wednesday afternoon during the train journey from Kiel to Hamburg.

At that time there were about 120 people on the regional train. Two people died and seven were injured.

What is the actual background?

The background to the crime is still unknown, police said.

When asked about a motive for the crime, the Home Secretary said: “We are working hard to get all the facts”.

According to the public prosecutor’s office of Itzehoe, there are no evidence of a terrorist background indeed.

Who is the culprit?

The alleged perpetrator is said to be a 33-year-old Palestinian. He was also injured in the murder.

Germany considers people who have no citizenship other than Palestinian citizenship to be stateless. Like most EU countries, Germany does not recognize the Palestinian territories as an independent state. However, that does not mean that all Palestinians are basically stateless; for example, they may have a Jordanian or Israeli passport.

The man could be overrun by train passengers. Sütterlin-Waack thanked the “courageous, even heroic efforts of some fellow passengers” in the regional express.

The 33-year-old must appear before the investigating judge on Thursday. The suspect is no longer receiving medical treatment, but is being held in police custody, it was reported.

The alleged perpetrator was until recently in a correctional facility in Hamburg (JVA). The reason was physical injury, according to the police in Itzehoe. According to dpa information, the man was housed in the Hamburg JVA Billwerder.

What do you know about the victims?

Parliament in Kiel began its session with a minute’s silence for the victims of the attack.

It concerned a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old, said Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack of Schleswig-Holstein on Thursday before a session of the state parliament.

According to a police spokeswoman, both victims suffered serious stab wounds, which resulted in death. The detective managed to secure the stabbing weapon of the perpetrator. She initially gave no details.

According to the police, the two fatal victims, from Schleswig-Holstein, knew each other.
