Critics want in the coronation year of the new king Charles III. hold a vote and demonstrate on the future of the British monarchy. The anti-monarchy organization Republic launched a petition for a public vote on the role the monarchy should play in the future.
By Wednesday afternoon, nearly 6,000 people had signed.
Republic supporters tried to put up a large white sign reading “Polling Station” outside Buckingham Palace on Wednesday. The organization advocates an elected head of state. “We should have the choice to decide: do we want Charles or an election?” spokesman Graham Smith told the PA news agency.
On the day of the coronation of Charles III, May 6, the opponents of the monarchy want to hold a large demonstration. Protests are also planned in the months before.
