In response to the initial discovery, Biden’s associates then looked elsewhere.

The discovery of documents is also highly explosive for Biden because former Republican President Donald Trump sparked a scandal over the summer with a similar case: Trump kept large amounts of confidential government documents at his private Florida estate after leaving the White House. The FBI searched the property in August and seized several classified documents. Biden criticized Trump’s handling of the documents at the time.

In Trump’s case, Garland also brought in an independent special investigator for the politically sensitive investigations — especially since Trump announced a renewed candidacy for president and criticized the investigations against him as politically motivated. Biden has also repeatedly expressed his general intention to re-run in the 2024 presidential election. He has not yet made a final decision public.

Trump responded cheerfully on Saturday. On his online platform “Truth Social,” he wrote to Biden and his team: “You yourself caused this document chaos by firing at me so hard – I did nothing wrong.”
