Somalia: At least 49 Al-Shabaab fighters killed Error in Prince Harry’s biography: these details are incorrect

At least 49 members of the extremist terrorist militia Al-Shabaab were killed in clashes in central Somalia on Thursday, the army said.

Military spokesman Abdullahi Ali Anod told the German news agency that the attack was in retaliation for an attack by al-Shabaab on a military base a few days ago. At least 20 Somali soldiers were killed.

The crisis state in the Horn of Africa with about 16 million inhabitants has been shaken by terrorist attacks and other acts of violence for years. Al-Shabaab controlled large parts of the country. For several months, however, the government in Mogadishu has been conducting a military offensive against Al-Shabaab.

According to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, this is now entering the next phase. After government forces managed to recapture large parts of central Somalia in cooperation with local clans, the focus is now also on the regions of southwestern Somalia and Jubaland, which are still held by Al-Shabaab. Turkey and the US support Somalia in the fight against the Islamists with drones. (aeg/sda/dpa)
