Police take Greta Thunberg into custody after further protests Wagner mercenary deserts and flees to Norway

Even though the German village of Lützerath has now been evacuated, the protests continue. Hundreds of protesters gathered near Lützerath on Tuesday – including well-known Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who has been in Germany for several days.

According to the police, people would have left the demonstration and headed for the Garzweiler opencast mine. At that point, law enforcement officers intervened. According to media reports, batons and pepper spray were also used.

Greta Thunberg also belonged to a group of protesters, who were then surrounded. The Swede is said to have sat on a pile of dirt and resisted requests to leave it. As shown in a social media video, she was then carried away by police.

According to a photographer from the dpa news agency, Thunberg would have been carried about 50 meters. Police then conducted an identity check and took the group into custody. What will happen to Thunberg is open. A spokeswoman for Aachen police headquarters, Dana Zimmermann, told AFP news agency that a decision would be made when the identity check is complete. (dab)
