Number of deaths rising, power shortages – most important of missile attack in Dnipro China has reported around 60,000 corona deaths since early December – doubts about official information

After the devastating Russian missile attack on a residential building in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, the death toll has risen to more than 20, according to authorities. Dozens more people were injured or were still missing the following day on Sunday. President Volodymyr Zelenskyj offered his condolences to the bereaved – and called for retaliation.

In addition, after the worst wave of Russian attacks since the turn of the year, many Ukrainians faced even greater problems with electricity supply than before.

More than 20 killed and 70 injured in Dnipro

By Sunday afternoon, 23 people had been rescued dead from the rubble of the partially collapsed high-rise, Dnipro city council said. More than 40 people were still missing on Saturday after the explosion. According to civil protection, 72 people were injured and rescued, including 13 children.

The attack on Dnipro, in the central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, was the most memorable of several attacks on Saturday. There were occasional air raid sirens throughout the country. It was the first major Russian attack of this kind since the turn of the year. At least 26 civilians have been killed and more than 80 injured across the country, according to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform. The leadership in Kiev sharply condemned the attacks and again spoke of “Russian terror”.

Ukraine complains about power shortages

After the mass attacks, Ukraine also prepared its citizens for increasing problems with electricity supply. Across the country, the already significantly reduced amount of electricity per household had to be reduced even further in many places on Sunday in order to avoid major bottlenecks, state electricity grid operator Ukrenerho reports on Facebook. Even emergency stops are not excluded.

In addition to Dnipropetrovsk, the region around the capital Kiev and Kharkiv in the east of the country were also hit by the Russian shelling.

Moscow: ‘The goal of the blow was achieved’

The Russian Defense Ministry did not comment on the many civilian casualties. Instead, ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Sunday regarding the latest attacks: “All designated objects were hit. The target of the blow was achieved.” Ukrainian media accused the Russian side of cynicism in view of this statement.

Zelenskyj calls for more guns after Russia’s “missile terror”.

In response to the Russian attacks, Zelensky demanded more weapons from the West on Saturday evening. Russian terror can be stopped with Western weapons, which the Ukrainian army is waiting for, the Ukrainian president said every night in his video message. At the same time, he thanked Britain for being the first country to supply main battle tanks to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims in Dnipro. “Unfortunately, the list of deaths is getting longer every hour… My condolences go out to relatives and friends.” (sda/dpa)
