Fields and roads were flooded in many places, power lines were damaged. According to the website poweroutage.us, some 20,000 households were without power at around 12:30 pm Sunday evening (CET). “We’re not done yet,” warned the governor of the US state, Gavin Newsom, on Saturday after visiting those affected. He warned to remain vigilant.
Nearly 26,000 Californians were still affected by flood warnings Saturday night, according to the U.S. weather service NWS. Tens of thousands of people were called to leave their homes.
“Catastrophic flooding” was predicted for an area on the Salinas River, a major agricultural area south of the San Francisco Bay Area. According to a journalist from the AFP news agency, the river has overflowed its banks in many places and fields have been flooded. In the mountains, the precipitation led to heavy snowfall. Authorities warned of avalanche danger.
California has been struggling in the wake of decades of drought and has been suffering winter storms for weeks, with rainfall and snow levels hitting some areas in 150 years. At least 19 people were killed. (sda/afp)
