The statistics include data not only from the network node in Frankfurt/Main, but also from the distribution points in Mubai, New York and Madrid and other DE-CIX locations.
In total, more than 48 exabytes of data will be exchanged on the DE-CIX internet nodes in 2022. This is equivalent to the storage capacity of more than 370 million smartphones, each with 128 GB of storage space. In 2021, the total data throughput was still 38 exabytes.
“More and more data is being sent over the internet as modern digital applications and services require more and more data from different sources,” said Christoph Dietzel, head of production and research at DE-CIX. This trend will continue as consumer demand for digital applications continues to grow.
DE-CIX registered the highest data throughput of 2022 worldwide on December 14: on the evening of the second semi-final at the World Cup in Qatar between France and Morocco at around 8:28 p.m., 132 terabytes flowed in one minute via the Internet nodes, the stations in New York and Frankfurt set new records.
According to DE-CIX, there were clear differences during the year in when which services were used. In the summer months, for example, there was a sharp drop in data traffic from video conferencing on the major internet exchanges in Frankfurt, New York and Madrid.
DE-CIX operates one of the world’s largest internet exchanges in Frankfurt am Main. The company offers its services in more than 40 metropolitan areas in Europe, Africa, North America, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.
