US President Joe Biden expressed surprise at the secret government documents discovered in his cabinet and promised “full cooperation” with the investigation. He did not know what the contents of the documents were, Biden said Tuesday (local time) on the sidelines of the North American summit in Mexico City. All documents have been transferred to the National Archives.
Monday (local time) it was announced that Biden had kept classified documents from his time as US Vice President Barack Obama in his private offices at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, US. Biden used the property after his term ended. Biden confirmed that when evacuating the office, his lawyers found a box of documents, which also contained classified documents, in a “locked cupboard”.
These are reportedly 10 confidential documents, some of them with the highest level of classification. According to CNN, this includes papers from the US secret service about other countries, such as Ukraine, Iran or Great Britain.
As the White House announced, the documents were found on November 2 and turned over to the National Archives. They were not the subject of a previous request from the archive. In the United States, government records are generally required to be archived and preserved for posterity. The Justice Department is now investigating the matter.
The find is particularly explosive because Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump also kept secret government documents after his term in office and was therefore the target of the researchers. Over the summer, FBI federal police seized thousands of documents from Trump’s private home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, after Trump resisted releasing them for months.
Investigations against Trump are now underway. An indictment is one of the possibilities, the ex-president would have committed a criminal offense. Biden had criticized Trump’s behavior in September as “irresponsible” – Trump, for his part, was quick to criticize Biden after his case went public. (con/sda/dpa)
