The well-known Iranian politician Faeseh Hashemi has been sentenced to five years in prison for alleged systemic statements.
The online newspapers “Hammihan” and “Emtedad” reported this on Tuesday, citing their legal adviser. The verdict is therefore not yet final.
Hashemi was arrested at the end of September for showing solidarity with the women’s movement. Authorities accuse her of calling for protests.
The 60-year-old Hashemi is the daughter of former president Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, who died in 2017, and has been a critic of the Islamic system for years. The former MP and sports official is a thorn in the side of the political leadership of the Islamic Republic and has been arrested several times.
As a women’s activist, Hashemi has always been against the compulsory headscarf, although she dresses and veils traditionally. She was editor of the daily newspaper “San” (Woman), which had to close in 1999 because of her feminist views.
The latest wave of protests in Iran was triggered by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody on September 16, 2022. The Iranian Kurd was arrested by the so-called vice police for violating Iran’s Islamic dress code. (aeg/sda/dpa)
