Protests against interim president Boluarte: at least nine dead in Peru Are there too many tourists for you? Here are 11 insider tips for traveling in Europe

At least nine people have been killed in renewed anti-government protests in southern Peru.

The ombudsman of the South American country announced this on Monday. Earlier, protesters and security forces had fought violently in the town of Juliaca.

The ombudsman called on military and police officers as well as protesters to exercise restraint. A few days ago, government opponents attempted to storm Juliaca airport and got into violent street battles with police.

The protests are directed against the government of interim president Dina Boluarte. The demonstrators demand the resignation of the head of state, the dissolution of the congress and the release of imprisoned ex-president Pedro Castillo.

Wanting to avoid a no-confidence vote in December, the former village school teacher dissolved the Congress. Parliament subsequently removed him from office. He was arrested on charges of attempted coup and remains in custody. Since the arrest, his supporters have repeatedly taken to the streets. (sda/dpa)
