Russian missiles “kill” 600 Ukrainian soldiers – this is what the “hit” building looks like New weapons and the inventive spirit of the people: what gives hope in the war in Ukraine

The sting after the Ukrainian attack on Makiivka runs deep in the Russians. So deep that they launched a deadly retaliatory attack on Sunday night. At least that’s what they claim.

«600 dead Ukrainian soldiers»

More than 600 Ukrainians have been killed in a massive Russian missile strike in eastern Ukraine, the Russian defense ministry announced on Sunday. Two temporary bases in Kramatorsk, previously discovered by Russian intelligence, were targeted.

“As a result of a massive rocket attack on these improvised bases of the Ukrainian army, more than 600 Ukrainian soldiers were killed.”

Specifically, 700 soldiers would have stayed in dormitory number 28 and 600 soldiers in dormitory number 47. Almost half of all these soldiers would have died in the attack on the two buildings.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, it was a retaliatory attack. A retaliation for the Ukrainian attack on New Year’s Eve.

Revenge for Makiivka

On the night of January 1, Ukraine shelled a building in the occupied city of Makiivka. About 400 Russian soldiers were killed, according to Ukrainian sources. Russia itself estimated the number of dead at 89. Many times less, but still one of the largest losses in a single war event since the beginning of the offensive war.

Photos of the building show how devastating this Ukrainian blow was:

Now Russia has retaliated. At least that’s what they claim, because: they search in vain for similar photos that would prove the success of their attack.

Intact buildings

You are much more likely to find images that expose Russia’s lies. For the buildings in Kramatorsk mentioned by Russia do exist. But the problem from Russia’s point of view: they are still standing.

However, it’s not like they haven’t tried. As Italian journalist Daniele Raineri writes on Twitter, a crater in the ground indicates a Russian attack. This is located next to dormitory number 28, but has not touched any of the surrounding buildings.

A similar image can be seen in dormitory number 47. There is a large crater in front of the building. Apart from shattered windows, the building was largely undamaged.

There is no evidence that there were actually Ukrainian soldiers in the buildings.

“A regular day”

Statements from the residents of Kramatorsk make it clear that the Russian attack could not have taken place as claimed. Their houses shake at night, they report to “Reuters”. However, in the vicinity of the Eastern Front, this is nothing unusual.

On the contrary. For them, the war has become a frighteningly normal everyday life:

“There was an explosion and then another. The windows were shaking… Really, that’s all there is to say. A very normal day.”

Kramatorsk mayor Oleksandr Honcharenko confirms that his city was shelled. Two educational institutions and eight residential buildings and garages were damaged, but no one was killed.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian armed forces also denied the Russian retaliatory attack, according to “Al Jazeera”. He smiles wearily at the Russian claim:

“This information is about as true as it says that all of our HIMARS have been destroyed.”
