The out-voted Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has apparently left the official residence of the head of state in Brasília in the worst possible condition, TV images show on Friday.
New First Lady Rosangela “Janja” da Silva on Friday led reporters from TV Globo through the Alvorada Palace to show the state of affairs after the previous occupant left.
Parts of the famous building were “dilapidated,” the wife of incoming president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said during the tour, pointing to ripped carpets, broken floors, broken windows and water damage to a ceiling. A huge banquet room, filmed by the TV crew, was completely empty and all furniture had apparently been removed.

An unknown amount of furniture and artwork from the presidential residence is missing, Rosangela da Silva described. Other furniture was damaged and a painting from the 19th century just lay on the floor. In contrast, electronic equipment was scattered throughout the historic library, from which Bolsonaro gave weekly video speeches during his term in office, which ended around the turn of the year.
Da Silva announced that she and her husband would first renovate the presidential palace and have the damage repaired. They only wanted to move into the house after a complete inventory of the inventory. The intention is to place the furniture and works of art on the list of national heritage “so that it cannot happen again that a president takes historical objects that belong to the Brazilian state”.
