US President Joe Biden will not travel to the WEF in Davos this year, nor will his Vice President, Kamala Harris, or Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The US is instead sending John Kerry, the president’s special envoy for climate, and Secretary of Labor Martin J. Walsh.
The US delegation to the World Economic Forum (WEF), taking place in Graubünden from January 16-20, also includes FBI Director Christopher Wray, intelligence coordinator Avril Haines, Secretary of Development Samantha Power and several senators and members of the House of Representatives. . The US embassy in Bern announced this on Friday evening.
About 3000 international participants from business, politics, science and society are expected at the WEF 2023. This year’s motto is “Collaboration in a Fragmented World”.
The WEF will publish the guest list next week. It is already known that Federal President Alain Berset, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, will participate in the meeting.
Last year, the World Economic Forum in Davos was postponed from January to May due to the corona pandemic. This time the focus was not on the economy, but on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been raging since February. There were about 2500 participants. Topics such as global warming or the consequences of the pandemic were pushed to the sidelines.
At many events over the past year, Ukrainian representatives have called each other back. In a video address at the opening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the international community to impose “maximum” sanctions on Russia.
The ruling elite of the WEF in turn pledged support and solidarity to Ukraine. EU Commission President von der Leyen said this was “a crucial moment for all democracies”. (saw/sda)
