Journalist arrested in Iran

Beyk’s mobile phone and notebook were confiscated. Numerous Iranian journalists have been arrested in recent weeks as part of a wave of arrests. The newspaper can be assigned to the reform camp.

More than 80 media workers have already been arrested during the recent protests, according to New York’s Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Reporting capabilities are extremely limited in the country. Disruptions and blockages of the internet occur again and again. Iran is one of the last places in a press freedom ranking by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Iran’s political leadership has been under immense strain since nationwide protests erupted in mid-September. Following the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody, Tehran plunged into its worst political crisis in decades. The 22-year-old was arrested more than three months ago for violating Islamic dress codes.

Some journalists are being held in the notorious Ewin Prison in the capital Tehran. The journalist Nilufar Hamedi of the reform newspaper Shargh, who was one of the first to publicize the Amini case, and her colleague Elaheh Mohammadi are also detained there. The Secret Service recently described the women as foreign agents. The newspaper denied the allegations.
