Power struggle continues: Seventh vote on chief post in the House of Representatives More extreme weather in Australia: floods, lightning strikes and bushfires

A seventh round of voting has begun in the Republicans’ bitter power struggle for the presidency of the US House of Representatives. The MPs gathered in the Parliament Hall on Thursday afternoon (local time). Republican nominee Kevin McCarthy suffered a historic defeat earlier on Tuesday and Wednesday, losing in six votes. Before the new vote, the 57-year-old had again made concessions to his party opponents.

Several Republicans refused to endorse McCarthy on Tuesday and Wednesday and voted for other candidates in the presidential election. In Wednesday’s vote, 20 Republicans rallied behind opposition candidate Byron Donalds. Also on Thursday, a McCarthy opponent again nominated Donalds. Until the personal details of the chairman have been clarified, nothing will happen in the House of Representatives: even the new MPs cannot be sworn in. (sda/dpa)
