In France, a woman has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for kidnapping her daughter and hiding with her for years, also in Switzerland. This was decided by the Court of Appeal of Aix-en-Provence on Wednesday.
The AFP news agency and other French media reported about it.
The mother remains in prison, but her sentence has been reduced compared to the first-instance conviction last September, which was five years in prison without parole.
The conviction is accompanied by a three-year ban from leaving France. The mother must also pay the father 30,000 euros as compensation for the immaterial damage.
The 48-year-old mother and her 17-year-old daughter were discovered in early March 2022 during a traffic check in the Morges region of the canton of Vaud and extradited to France in August. She had been missing since 2011.
The mother had fled the Toulon region with her then five-year-old daughter. She was in the process of getting a divorce at the time and demanded full custody of their daughter.
The woman had accused her ex-husband of raping their daughter. However, the investigation was later dropped.
The 16-year-old girl was entrusted last year to the General Directorate for Children and Youth of the Canton of Vaud, placed in a home and placed under guardianship.
According to broadcaster France Info, the youngster now lives with a family in Switzerland. That is why she also filed a lawsuit against her father there for psychological, physical and sexual violence.
The case caused a stir in France. Several public figures expressed solidarity with the mother, writing: “I would have done it just like her.” A petition demanding the woman’s acquittal found more than 12,000 supporters. (sda/afp/dpa)
