Republican Kevin McCarthy failed his fourth attempt at the House of Representatives election. This followed the result of the oral vote on Wednesday, which still had to be formally endorsed by the chairman of the session in the parliamentary chamber. McCarthy had already fallen short of the required number of votes on three ballots on Tuesday, as several party members refused to support him.
Once again, the Republicans had nominated an opposing candidate. Republican MP Chip Roy sent his fellow party member Byron Donalds as a candidate. He got 20 votes. McCarthy was unable to reduce the number of his opponents compared to the previous day’s votes. On Tuesday, opponents of McCarthy had already put forward several alternative candidates.
It is a historic defeat for McCarthy, 57, as it marks the first time in a hundred years that a political group has refused to support its candidate in the first round of elections. (sda/dpa)
