A dozen hammerheads in the sea: well-known Sydney beach closed Four dead after helicopter collision in Australia

Shock moment at a popular Sydney beach: After more than a dozen hammerhead sharks were sighted near Palm Beach, authorities sounded the alarm on Tuesday – asking all swimmers in the water to get ashore as soon as possible. The beach was initially closed, broadcaster 9News reports. The sharks made their rounds only about 200 yards from the flag-marked bathing area. It is currently summer down under.

Three species of hammerhead sharks roam Australia’s waters. However, according to experts, only the great hammerhead with a size of up to six meters is considered dangerous to humans. However, attacks are relatively rare. It was initially unclear what species it was on Palm Beach.

The picturesque beach is a good hour’s drive north of Sydney’s city centre. Affectionately referred to as “Palmy” by residents, it is also often used as a setting for film and television. (sda/dpa)
