City cancels fireworks to avoid scaring a walrus during rare visit that Pope Francis prays for the late Benedict XVI

Many dog and cat owners don’t like New Year’s Eve or August 1st. The sound of rockets and fireworks drives their four-legged friends crazy. In Scarborough, England, the authorities loved animals.

Because a walrus had chosen the harbor of the English coastal town of Scarborough as a resting place, the New Year’s Eve fireworks in the city failed.

As the British news channel Sky News reports on its website, the council followed the advice of experts concerned about the welfare of the animal. They feared loud popping noises and flashes of light could stress the walrus, who was named Thor.

Thor had been dozing in the harbor of the north-east English city since Friday night, drawing crowds of spectators.

According to a report from the “Yorkshire Post,” the animal retreated to the water before midnight on Saturday. Still, they had to do without the planned fireworks.

The British PA news agency quoted animal rights activists as saying the walrus is on its way north and is making a stopover off the English coast. It was sighted off the south coast of England in early December. (ram/sda/dpa)
