Russia once presented it as nothing less than the “best main battle tank in the world”. The T-14 Armata was first paraded on the Red Square in Moscow in 2015. With a new steel alloy, the tank should be better protected against defensive weapons. But then the “T-14 Armata” was declared unusable:
A propaganda video on Telegram, shared by Russian TV agitator Vladimir Solovyov, is now raising questions. The tank should now be ready for use in the war – and should therefore also be able to drive in the Ukraine.
The “T-14 Armata” was originally intended to replace the previous tanks of the Russian army – mainly the “T-72”, “T-80” and “T-90” models. Military expert Gustav Gressel told Der Spiegel in May that this is currently not possible. Because with production costs of around four million dollars each, the tank is much too expensive for series production.
It is probably true that the tank is – on paper – one of the most modern. However, according to Gressel, Russia lacked the necessary components to produce an operational “T-14 Armata”. The sanctions imposed by the West are unlikely to change that much. (fwe)
