According to Mayor Byron Brown, about 500 residents of the city of Buffalo were still without power.
An arctic cold front with temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius had plunged large parts of the US into chaos shortly before Christmas. The situation in Buffalo and surrounding areas of Erie County was particularly dramatic. Several bodies were found in their cars or under snowdrifts.
Given the now rising temperatures, the authorities warned of a thaw on Wednesday. “As temperatures rise, we expect the snow to melt and possibly rapid melting flooding to occur,” said Mark Poloncarz, Erie County administrator.
The blizzard has also been causing chaos in air traffic for days. Southwest Airlines, which had to cancel more than 2,500 extra flights on Wednesday, was particularly affected. (sda/afp)
