After the explosion of a gas tanker in South Africa on December 24, the death toll has risen to 26. The provincial authorities in Gauteng confirmed this to the German news agency on Wednesday.
In the early hours of Christmas Eve, the gas tanker exploded in the town of Boksburg, not far from Johannesburg, causing many injuries and extensive damage to nearby homes and a local hospital. According to the health authorities, the costs of repairing the damage to the hospital alone amount to R18 million (almost one million euros).
According to preliminary investigations, the car got stuck while crossing a low bridge nearby. According to police, the resulting friction between the truck and the bridge led to the explosion. An involuntary manslaughter charge was dropped for lack of evidence, although the 32-year-old tanker driver did not appear in court. (sda/dpa)
