Amounts in the billions, sanctions, phone calls – since Vladimir Putin (70) invaded Ukraine, Europe has been assisting Ukraine. But is Europe really doing everything it can to stop the aggressor against Russia? Not at all, says military expert Gustav Gressel (43), who is mainly concerned with strategic military issues in Eastern Europe and Russia.
In his verdict, he literally tears the EU politicians and the Federal Chancellery in the air, as the “Stern” reports. Their attitude is hesitant – and they wouldn’t take matters into their own hands. Instead, the US should take over. “The American must go and guide them, as small children do.”
But Gressel goes one step further. “In Europe, we mainly deal with political leaders who do not dare to jump over the slightest obstacle alone,” the political scientist continues. The reason for this is the nuclear inequality between the world powers.
Putin will try again to conquer Kiev
Gressel’s forecast for the further course of the war is correspondingly gloomy: a new massive offensive by Putin’s troops is expected in the spring of 2023. A renewed invasion of Kiev cannot be ruled out either. However, the expert considers it unlikely that the Russian forces will succeed in taking the Ukrainian capital.
According to him, the possible skirmishes in the spring should further boost the morale of the Ukrainians. And: a victory for the Ukrainian troops is not only welcome, but still a possible scenario. But more support with Western weapons is essential for this.
«Victory peace» of Ukraine is important
Europe must wake up and increase military support to Ukraine. Gressel fears that it could otherwise have fatal consequences for Europe: “The alternative to military support for Ukraine is that in ten years’ time you will have to go to war yourself against a Russia that invades us.”
This could only be prevented by a “victorious peace” by Ukraine – that is, a peace treaty, the terms of which were unilaterally established. Then lasting peace would be restored in Europe. (dzc)
