Rail travelers in Great Britain have to keep their nerves under control even after the end of a multi-day rail strike. Route operator Network Rail warned on Tuesday evening of “significant disruption” well into January.
An RMT union strike over Christmas at Network Rail ended early Tuesday morning. However, traffic was not expected to return to normal until later in the day.
Further strikes have also been announced at individual companies. On Monday night, the TSSA union began a 24-hour strike at Cross Country rail operator, which covers important long-distance services.
At Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains, TSSA members, who are responsible for training, controls, customer communication and timetables, among other things, wanted to shut down for a day from Wednesday afternoon.
The Ministry of Transport called on unions to cancel the strikes and accept the fare offer from the private railways. However, given the rising cost of living, workers’ representatives are calling for significantly higher wage increases and, given widespread austerity measures, greater job security. RMT has already announced new strikes for early January.
According to an analysis by The Guardian newspaper, there are huge problems on the British rail network. According to this year, more than half of the trains departing from the 15 main stations this year had delays or other disruptions.
According to experts, the problems are due to the privatization of the railway companies. This led to higher costs and government subsidies. The pandemic has exacerbated the labor shortage. (saw/sda/awp/dpa)
